Chronic Pain

Pain Science and the Biopsychosocial Approach

The therapists at Aberdeen Physical Therapy & Wellness take a biopsychosocial approach to patient care. We look at the entire person and the interconnection between biology, psychology, and sociology-environmental factors and how they may impact someone’s pain.

Our therapists use evidence-based principles regarding neurobiology and neurophysiology to help them form a plan and understand how to treat each person. Pain science is not just for those dealing with persistent and complex pain–anyone can benefit from gaining a better understanding of how their body works and what factors are relevant to their pain.

Specific treatments may include:

  • Education on pain
  • Graded motor imagery
  • Online tools for use at home
  • Aerobic and specific exercise to target impairments and improve healing
  • Modalities and dry needling for pain reduction and downregulation
  • Pacing strategies
